We’re no Adam and Eve but…

June 22, 2010

As you may or may not know, Alberta is officially tied with NW 23rd as my favorite Portland neighborhood. And the last time we explored this diverse and dynamic NEP street, we came across a unique find in local cafe Back to Eden. Nestled between 22nd and 23rd, this organic, vegan (and altogether yummy) bakery was a welcome surprise after our amazing dinner nearby.

The woman behind the counter was helpful and super friendly. She didn’t even mind when it took me five minutes to decide between desserts (I chose the key-lime pie, which was incredible). The space is small but welcoming, with local art, gifts and vegan cookbooks for sale too.

So, if you’re vegan, organically-inclined or just a lover of good dessert, Back to Eden is as close to heaven as you can get.

Join the Society in Alberta

June 13, 2010

As a Nob Hill-er for my entire Portland life, I never thought I would find another neighborhood that I love as much as Northwest 23rd, but recently *GASP* I have. It’s official: Preppy in Portland adores Alberta.

A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend and I had dinner at one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Portland, Siam Society. We’ve been hitting up this Alberta main-stay for a couple of years now, and each time I go back I fall in love all over again with the incredible industrial feel (the building used to be a power utility), impressive wine list and amazing food.

Plus, with their hefty portions and reasonable prices, there’s nothing not to love about this place. On the menu for us is usually one of their mouth-watering curries, though I’m also smitten with their Farmers Market Stir Fry of the seafood variety, which comes with big chunks of halibut, scallops, prawns and calamari with fresh veggies.

Siam Society is definitely not to be missed, and keep an eye out for more posts about my upcoming adventures in Alberta! Do you have a favorite spot along Alberta? Tell me about it!

Two things I love: a good sale and Bubble Boutique.

May 25, 2010

As you probably know already, one of my favorite things to do on a sunny Saturday is grab a latte and explore the newest merchandise at the collection of fabulous boutiques in the Pearl. I have a couple of favorites that I visit each time, one of which is Bubble Boutique on 11th and Glisan. This chic and trendy spot tends to be a little pricy for the average spontaneous weekend purchase (sad but true), but lucky for us, my frugal-ish friends, Bubble is celebrating their 4th anniversary with what else? A SALE!

Everything you need to know is below. There are also rumors of a pre-sale tomorrow evening – will keep you posted on details!

Update: Presale is tonight from 6-9. Thanks Portland Picks for the details!

See you there!

New Feature! Preppy Products. This Week: Forget diamonds, roll-up flats are a girl’s best friend.

May 21, 2010

I know they say beauty is pain, and I would agree on most fronts, but the kind of pain that a pair of uncomfortable heels inflicts is the furthest from beautiful – it’s the kind of torture that makes even the most fabulous party seem like water-boarding.

So, what’s a gal to do when even her most sincere heel-wearing efforts are thwarted by four-inch agony miles from her closet? Roll-up flats, of course! These modern marvels have been around for a couple of years, but just recently, I’ve come to realize what an important role they can play in the life of a fabulous city girl. Slim and super compact, they can fit in even the smallest purse. Whether they’re saving you from a couple of hours of breaking in new pumps or just a 12 hour workday, these little babies let you have your cake and eat it too. What’s better than that!?

There are a bunch of different brands out there in a couple different styles,  all around 20 bucks. My only peeve is that I wish they came in more sizes – all make you choose size 5-6, 7-8, 9-10. What’s a size 8 1/2 girl to do!?

City Slips – the simplest style I’ve found, they also have the best ingenuity when it comes to the bag

Rolleez – come in a bunch of different colors but don’t include the bags that the other companies offer

Footzyrolls – my favorite of the three, they come in basic colors and some faux snake-skin variations

Have a favorite brand of roll-up flats? Know a place in Portland that carries them? Let me know!

Holy All Night Happy Hour, Portland!

May 18, 2010

Last night, I finally got the chance to check out Melt, a restaurant on NW 21st and Irving that I’ve been dying to visit for weeks. What’s so exciting about this little hole in the wall? Four words: all night happy hour. Oh, and two more: full bar.

While the exterior may be unassuming, inside Melt you’ll find bright-colored walls and an airy feel, despite the small space. The cocktail menu is diverse, with a handful of the classics available for just $5 after 4pm. Their happy hour and regular menus include an array of appetizers, sandwiches and salads. If I had to define it, I would say they serve a mix of southern, middle-eastern and comfort food (if you can’t picture it check out their HH menu).

Considering they tout local microbrews as one of their top three offerings, I was hoping for a couple more on tap. But all in all, I really enjoyed Melt for a reasonable, comfortable and satisfying post-work spot. Plus! With happy hour from 4pm to close every night, it’s a great place for those of us who have to plan in advance to make it out of the office by 6.
